Section 2 Analysis

In section two of the HSC paper my personal recommendation is that you take a ‘thesis’ based approach and target specific question categories.

The intention here is that you organize the information in your Case Studies to support a response to a specific question type. In Section 2 there are 6 questions; 2 x Practice, 2 x Frames and 2 x Conceptual Framework and you are required to answer ONE of these.

The assessment rubric for Section 2 tells you what you are being assessed on in your response.

In you answer you will be assessed on how well you;

  • present a well reasoned and informed point of view
  • apply your understandings of the different aspects of content as appropriate (Practice, Conceptual Framework and Frames)
  • use relevant examples

In your Case Studies it’s more than feasible to break down the information you have on your chosen artists and artworks into elements that relate to;

Practice

i.e., how does the artist make the work? In this you would explore;

  • Material choices, handling and sensibility.
  • The relationships between concept / vision and realization.
  • Working knowledge of materials
  • Training required or undertaken in material craftsmanship

Conceptual Framework

i.e., what relationships exist or are inferred between the agencies of the art world? In this you would explore;

  • Artist intentionality and practice.
  • Encoding and decoding artworks.
  • Semiotics.
  • Conventions of practice / art making.
  • The roles of audience, critic and historian.
  • The role of galleries, collectors and auction houses.
  • The roles of collections and exhibition curators.
  • The role of world events.

Frames

The Frames act as an interpretive lens through which to view the content and contexts of artworks. Essentially here you will need to explore the relationships between your chosen artists, reference works and the Frames.
